The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched in 2016 under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to provide LPG as cooking fuel to families living below the poverty line. A budget of ₹8,000 crore has been earmarked for the project from FY 2016-17 for the next 3 years and a target of 5 crore LPG connections has been set.
Many rural households still use firewood, coal, cow dung, etc. as cooking fuel, which is mainly harmful to the environment and also harmful to the health of the rural women users. Therefore, the Government of India has launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ to provide LPG as a clean pollution-free fuel to women, which has been specially commended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The target of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has been increased to provide 8 crore LPG connections to deprived households by March 2020, which has been achieved by September 2019.
In August 2021, the scheme was renamed Ujjwala 2.0 with a new lakh dimension and an additional 1.6 crore LPG connections to migrant families. This lakh level can be fulfilled in the month of December 2022 itself. Increases the budget by ₹6,100 crore for the financial year 2022-23 An allocation of ₹7,680 crore has been made in FY 2023-24.
What is Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?
There are still many families in India who live below the poverty line and use mainly unclean fuel for cooking, which is highly polluting and harmful to the environment. As a result of this contaminated fuel, women, children and other family members of the user mainly suffer from respiratory diseases.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 5 lakh deaths are caused by unclean and harmful cooking fuels in India alone, and most of these premature deaths are due to heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. Smoke from these contaminated cooking fuels is also responsible for acute respiratory illnesses in young children. According to experts, cooking fuel pollution is equivalent to burning 400 cigarettes an hour.
Therefore, through this Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana, the Government of India has taken a special initiative towards protecting health and environment and currently around 10 crore beneficiaries have taken the benefits of this Yojana.
