There are several popular schemes like Kanyashree, Oikyashri, Sabujsathi etc. aimed at providing encouragement and support in the field of education in West Bengal. The Sikshashree scheme is another equally popular scheme which was launched in 2014 to help students belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Tribes (SC/ST) category in education. About 2 lakh students get financial assistance under this scheme every year.
What is Sikshashree Project?
Under this Sikshashree scheme run by the Department of ‘Backward Class Welfare and Tribal Development’ of the Government of West Bengal, government financial assistance is provided for the education of Class V to VIII students belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Tribes of the state.
Earlier SC/ST students were given two grants, namely book and maintenance grant respectively. However, the amount of the grant was small and the disbursement process was complicated and time-consuming, so it did not succeed in fulfilling the purpose.
Revised that scheme and renamed it as ‘Shikshasree Scheme’ to provide quality support, applicable to SC/ST students studying in class V to VIII in any government, government aided and all government recognized schools in West Bengal.
