The education and protection of girls in our country has been given attention much later than other developed countries, but now the Government of India and the State Government have given special attention to this. The Indian government’s Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana aimed at protecting the girl child is just as significant as the West Bengal government’s Kanyashree scheme to promote girls’ education.

West Bengal, like other states in India, discourages girls from pursuing higher education and tends to marry them off at an early age. According to the ‘District Level Household and Facility Survey-3’ survey, West Bengal ranks fifth in terms of child marriage. According to the data of 2007-08, the number of married women below 18 years of age in West Bengal is about 54.74 percent and this rate is higher in rural areas.

On the other hand, according to ‘The Selected Educational Statistics 2010-11’ of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the dropout rate in West Bengal is 63.5 per cent among girls from class 1 to 10 and 64.9 per cent among boys, which is higher than the national average for both boys and girls.

However, in most cases the reason is that they are forced to drop out of school due to lack of desire to study and in the case of girls, they are given away in marriage.

Hence the Kanyashree scheme has been launched by the West Bengal Government whose main objective is to encourage girls in the state to pursue higher education through financial assistance and to stop the marriage of girls before the age of eighteen.

The Kanyashree project has also received various national and international recognitions for its social importance, features and success. Through this project it has been possible to bring about a massive change in the education of girls in the state.

Kanyashree project was launched in which year?

The Kanyashree scheme was launched on 14 August 2013 under the ‘Women Development and Social Welfare Department’ of the Government of West Bengal. So this day is celebrated as Kanyashree Divas. About 18 lakh girl students get annual scholarship under this scheme every year.

By providing financial assistance to the girls of the state under the Kanyashree scheme, it has been possible to achieve a larger objective along with education. They are listed below:

• The support of this scheme enables girls in the state to continue their education for a longer period of time through secondary, higher secondary, graduation and post-graduation Masters education, thereby providing them with both economic and social security.
• The Kanyashree scheme has been able to discourage girls from marrying before the legal age of marriage, thereby reducing the risk of early pregnancy, malnutrition or poor health, and maternal and child mortality.
• Funds from the project are sent directly to the girls’ bank accounts so they can decide how to spend the money themselves, helping to develop a mindset of financial independence and savings.

Earlier two scholarships k1 and k2 were available under Kanyashree scheme, now k3 scholarship has been added to it. Now let’s see how much money is available under the Kanyashree scheme:

Kanyashree Project k1

In case of Kanyashree Ist or k1 scholarship, girls aged 13 to 18 years (equivalent to class VIII to XII) will be paid ₹1000/- per annum, provided they must be unmarried.

Kanyashree Project k2

The second or k2 scholarship is a one-time grant of ₹25,000/-, which will be awarded to the girl after the age of 18 years, if she is unmarried and engaged in higher education or vocational education.

Kanyashree Project k3

The k3 scholarship is for girls who have completed graduation and who wish to pursue further studies. A scholarship of ₹2,500/- per month is given to all girls studying science and ₹2,000/- per month to students of commerce and arts.

Who will get the Kanyashree project?

This is a scholarship grant, so the actual recipient must receive the grant money. The scholarship has been designed with an eye on those who really need financial support for their education and to prevent underage girls from getting married due to family pressure.

• In case of Kanyashree scheme the girl applicant should be a permanent resident of West Bengal.
• Applicant age should be between 13 to 18 years.
• Applicants should be students of class 8 to 12 or equivalent.
• If the applicant has 40% or more disability then minimum class VIII is not eligible and in that case disability certificate is required.
• The annual income of his family should be less than 1 lakh 20 thousand rupees.
• If both parents of the applicant are deceased, or if the applicant is currently registered under the Juvenile Justice Act 2000, or has a disability of 40% or more, the annual income of the applicant’s family is not eligible.
• Only those who have applied Kanyashree k2 scheme for k3 scholarship can register online. For Kanyashree k3 scholarship, the applicant must have at least 45% marks in the final graduation examination. Girls studying in any college or university can apply for this k3 scholarship, and there is no upper age limit for this scholarship.

West Bengal Kanyashree Scheme Application Process

Important points for applying in this scheme are mentioned below:

• Kanyashree project application forms can be collected by the students from their respective educational institutions.
• All the required information in the application form like ‘Applicant Basic Details’ i.e. Name, Parent’s Name, Address, Aadhaar Card Number etc., followed by ‘Applicant Contact Details’ i.e. District, Street, Police Station, Post Office, Permanent Address etc., then ‘Bank Details’ Such as bank name, branch name, IFS code etc. details should be entered and signed by the applicant.
• Then the copies of important documents to be submitted along with the application form such as Birth Certificate, Aadhaar Card, Bank Passbook etc. must be ticked below and signed by the applicant and the legal guardian.
• Once the form is fully filled, it should be submitted to the applicant’s home educational institution along with the attached documents.
• After submission of the application form it will be verified by the Head of Department and an official stamp will be affixed on the correctness of the documents.
• Then an acknowledgment slip will be issued by the Head of Department, containing application number, name and other important details. This acknowledgment slip must be kept for future reference.
• After the application is verified and approved by the concerned authority, the scholarship money will be transferred to the bank account of the applicant.

What are the documents required for Kanyashree project?

Following is the list of documents required to apply for West Bengal Kanyashree Scheme:

• Signed Declaration of Singleness issued by applicant himself or his parents, guardian or Juvenile Justice Home.
• Proof of Annual Family Income
• Birth certificate
• Aadhaar Card
• School certificate or proof of enrollment in an educational institution
• Color passport size photograph of the applicant
• Copy of first page of bank passbook
• Disability Certificate (if applicable)

• In this page you first need to fill the year, no scholarship, application id, date of birth and captcha and then the status can be seen.

Kanyashree project k3 application

This k3 scholarship under Kanyashree scheme is new and can be applied online. It is awarded through ‘Swami Vivekananda Merit Cum Means Scholarship’ (SVMCM) or Vikas Bhavan Scholarship.

K3 Terms of application

Following conditions apply to Kanyashree k3 application:

• Applicants for k3 application must have Kanyashree K2 and K3 application form can be filled only after verifying K2 application year, Kanyashree ID, applicant name, date of birth etc.
• Post Graduate students in Science/Arts/Commerce who do not have Kanyashree (K2) ID should apply under Public Instruction category.
• Online registration is not required for renewal of existing beneficiaries. They can apply for renewal by logging in with their previous ID and password.

Kanyashree k3 application required documents

PDF of the following documents is mandatory for k3 application and the size can be upto 400KB maximum.

In case of new application:

• Secondary Examination Marksheet (Both Sides)
• Last Board/Council/University/College Examination Marksheet (Both Sides)
• Admission Receipt
• Aadhaar ID/Voter ID/Ration Card/Address Proof issued by concerned authority
• Scan copy of 1st page of bank passbook (with account number and IFSC code)
• If there is a gap of one year, a letter from the head of the institution regarding the reason

In case of renewal application:

• Copy of mark sheet of both sides of final examination or semester
• Receipt of admission to next higher class

The application process for k3 scholarship is mentioned below:

• For Kanyashree k3 application go to official official site SVMCM.
• Click on ‘Registration’ from the top menu of the website.
• Then two options will appear (i) Topper and (ii) Non-Topper, in that case ‘Non-Topper’ should be selected for Kanyashree k3.
• Then you will reach a page written k3 application procedure, where all the information and conditions related to online application will be given, read it properly and click on the tick mark and click on ‘Proceed for Registration’.
• Then you will reach the ‘Registration Category’ page, where ‘Kanyashree(K3)’ has to click on ‘Apply For Fresh Application’.



• The scholarship registration form will open to you, which you have to fill properly and click on the ‘Register’ button. Then your mobile number will be checked through OTP verification.
• After that registration slip will be generated which must be downloaded.
• After completing the registration process you have to click on ‘Applicant Login’ from the top menu and login with the application id and password you provided while registering.



• Then by clicking on ‘Edit Profile’ you will be given detailed information and PDF of all the documents mentioned above and click on ‘Submit Application’ to complete the application process. You can download and print the application form by clicking on ‘Download Application Details’.
