Why can’t we use the full space of memory devices such as hard-disks, memory cards?

What are storage devices or memory devices?

Devices that are used to store information are called storage devices or memory devices. When we buy a memory device, we cannot use its entire space in that memory device. Before using we need to know that the smallest unit used to measure memory is bit or binary digit. Other major units waiting for bits are mentioned below-

  • 1 Nibble = 4 Bit = 1 Word
  • 1 Byte = 8 bit = 1 Word
  • 1 KB (Kilobyte) = 1024 Byte
  • 1 MB (Megabyte) = 1024 KB (Kilobyte)
  • 1 GB (Gigabyte) = 1024 MB (Megabyte)
  • 1 TB (Terabyte) = 1024 GB (Gigabyte)

Word is not always right-

  • 1 Nibble = 4 Bit = 1 Word
  • 1 Byte = 8 bit = 1 Word

We all use different memory devices. We are very familiar with mobile memory cards, computer hard disks etc.

Why we can not use the full space of our memory device?

But have you noticed one thing? When we buy a memory device, we cannot use the entire space (Megabyte, Gigabyte) written on that memory device. For example, we can use 298 GB out of 320 GB hard disk.

Have you ever wondered where this memory goes? Let’s find out why we can not use the full space of our memory device?

Many of us know 1024Byte=1kilo Byte, 1024 MB = 1 GB; 1024 KB = 1MB.

For those who don’t know, MB (Megabyte), GB (Gigabyte) are memory units or units. Unit of mass is gram, unit of length is meter.

Now that 1024 MB = 1 GB; 1024 KB = 1MB, it is only applicable for Software Side. That is, on our mobile or on the computer it is like this is calculated.

But the calculation is a little different for the manufacturer companies who make these memory devices. According to them,

  • 1 KB (Kilobyte) = 1000 byte
  • 1 MB (Megabyte) = 1000 KB (Kilobyte)
  • 1 GB (Gigabyte) = 1000 MB (Megabyte)
  • 1 TB(Terabyte) = 1000 GB (Gigabyte)

320 GB calculate:

So when we talk about 320 GB Hard Disk it is calculated by those who made it i.e. manufacturer company. But SOFTWARE calculates it,

320*1000*1000*1000/1024/1024/1024 = 298.024 GB

500 GB calculate:

As a result, we see 298 GB of available memory in 320 GB hard disk. In the same way can use 500 GB hard disk,

500*1000*1000*1000/1024/1024/1024 = 465.661 GB.

Hope everyone understands the reason for this memory or space shortage.
