Why is WiFi so popular in today’s technology? How does WiFi work? What are the advantages and disadvantages of its use?

The full name of WiFi is Wireless Fidelity. WiFi is a wireless local area network system that allows portable computer devices to easily connect to the Internet. WiFi communication systems use high frequency radio waves. WiFi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance. IEEE802.11 standard This trademark is used by WiFi manufacturers to brand Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) devices. By far the most used WLAN class is IEE802.11. The term WiFi is often used as a synonym for IEEE802.11.

The Wi-Fi Alliance is a non-profit organization that promotes WiFi technology and certifies WiFi products. WiFi is commonly used in all types of laptops, peripheral devices, printers, smart phones, MP3 players, video game consoles and personal computers.

In the past, being able to use the internet on a mobile phone was very dangerous. But then came the trend of using internet from mobile to computer. And finally, nowadays internet is used by sending or sharing from one mobile to another mobile. And in this case WiFi is used a lot. However, WiFi is not only used to share the Internet. WIFI is a wireless signal that can be used to connect multiple computer devices. As a result, connected devices can exchange files or data with each other. And as a result of this wireless signal, the devices get the benefit of sharing “internet data” among themselves. We can also call WIFI as a wireless technology, where a computer can be connected to another computer wirelessly without any wires.

Features of WiFi:

  • Wi-Fi communication systems use high frequency radio waves.
  • By using WiFi, multiple computers can be connected to the Internet at the same time.
  • It is a standard developed by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEE802.11 for Wireless Local Area Network.
  • It is used in networks of various portable devices and fixed devices such as cordless telephones.
  • Its coverage area can cover a room, a building or an area of several kilometers.
  • It can be used in hotspots and its coverage is not available in many areas.
  • Wi-Fi products are certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance.

Different types of WiFi technologies:

  • IEEE 802.11a: Developed by IEEE in 1999 to operate up to 115 feet. This WiFi network can work at a speed of 54 Mbps.
  • IEEE 802.11b: It was developed in 1999 for general home use that will operate at 11 Mbps up to 115 feet.
  • IEEE 802.11g: 802.11g was created in 2003 by combining 802.11a and 802.11b. Its speed is 54 Mbps and this network will work up to 125 feet.
  • IEEE 802.11n: It was introduced to work with dual band routers. Its data transfer capacity is 54 Mbps and works up to 230 feet. Created in 2009.
  • IEEE 802.11ac: This was also developed in 2009 with a speed of 1.3 Gbps and can cover 115 distances.
So you see, about the different types and capabilities of WiFi networks.
Each different type of WiFi network can have different speed and distance coverage.

How does WiFi work?

The process that WiFi uses to exchange information between devices is “network radio waves”. Remember, before using WiFi, you must have a wireless adapter installed on your computer, smartphone or other devices. You can also install a separate wireless adapter on your computer. And the main function of this wireless adapter is to transmit the data or information received through the network in the form of “radio signal”. So it can be said that WiFi works like any other wireless device. Here, radio frequencies are used to send signals between connected computer devices. Signals are sent through the antenna to the decoder. Signal decoder is also known as router. Once the signals are decoded by the router, they are sent to the internet via an ethernet connection. Similarly, data received from the Internet will first arrive within the router. And, within the router, every data coming from the Internet will be decoded and converted into radio signals. Then finally, the wireless adapter in the computer devices connected to the WiFi router will receive those radio signals.

Convenience of WiFi:

  • By using WiFi technology, multiple computers can be connected to the Internet at the same time.
  • WiFi is a wireless local area network system.
  • It can be used to access the internet.
  • WiFi technology is easy to use within a limited area.
  • WiFi is cheaper than local area network.

Disadvantages of WiFi:

  • The biggest advantage of using WiFi is that it is only used in hotspots.
  • Its coverage is not available in many areas.
  • Data transfer speed of WiFi technology is not very high.
  • The security system is relatively weak.

Use of WiFi:

  • WiFi technology is easy to use within a limited area.
  • WiFi technology can be used in educational institutions to facilitate the use of students.
  • WiFi technology services can be provided at airports, hotels, restaurants.
  • WiFi can be easily used in all types of electronic devices that have WiFi.
  • Currently, several people can play the same video game together using WiFi.
